The plan is to pick up a spool of CDs this weekend and get back on track with this project. I'm also thinking of replacing one of the above OS' in the list with Chromium OS (the open source basis for Chrome OS), but it requires a lot of command line so I may chicken out.

To install Chromium, I have to build it first. And to build it, I need Ubuntu. So it looks like I will be installing Ubuntu first. Downloading now.

Leopard got as far as the apple screen before locking up; farther than I could get Snow Leopard yet. Also tried Ubuntu; it tried to eat my disk drive, so I don't know whats up with that.

Please keep us posted on your results, Cy. i've got a couple of old desktops collecting dust in the garage so maybe i'll start experimenting with Linux. Some employers here are regularly looking for Linux familiarity & proficiency, and playing around with OS distros is probably my best bet to learn more right now.

In a week i'm starting A+ certification class. Then Network+. They were the cheapest, quickest and most foundational certifications i could pursue right now. Most 'bang for the buck' you might say.

HP's opening a huge new facility in January right up the hill from us - i'll probably go for MCDST next.

Well, my CD drive wouldn't open after the Ubuntu boot and instal failed, so I had to go into Bios and switch my boot order just to get back to Vista where I was finally able to make it spit the disk out.

When I did the 50/50 ubuntu-xp laptop, I completely lost the cd drive on the xp side. I can boot from cd if I change the bios, but I can't find the cd drive anywhere in xp. It's a biatch to find the drivers to re-install the cd drive... and the only thing I use that drive for is booting the next release of ubuntu Smile So... it's not really necessary to have it functional.

On a side note, I went to office max and wally world last week on my way home from work to get an S-video and wifi card for the laptop that I'm putting in the mix with the tv and components... couldn't get either one of them from the brick and mortar store. I don't want to get a usb dongle for the wifi because this is an old laptop with usb 1.0 ports and I don't think they will be fast enough.

Ordered both online today... paid less for both with shipping than i expected to pay in the store for just the wifi card.

Another side note... what does this mean? Can I use this drive with a combination of a mac and windows machines?

I'm not necessarily going to get THIS drive... but when it comes to setting up something that will be central storage for both mac and windows machines, what do I need to look for?

Yeah, it should work fine on both platforms.

Cool, I bought it... it was cheap.

320gb is probably 3 times more than I need, anyway

Depends on what you're storing.

I have 15 gigs free on my 75 gb mac hard drive... I got up to within 4gb of it being full before I deleted a few movies that I had watched and just hadn't gotten around to deleting. The only stuff I "keep" is music... and even at that, I download maybe 1 song a week on average... I will never fill 320 gb... ever. Smile

So you say. My PC has 700 GBs of space and I only have 250 left available. And I have already used 100 GB of the storage on my TB network drive.

But what do you have on there? I might download 3 or 4 movies at a time, take a week to watch them and then delete them. In my entire iTunes library, I have 7.16 gigs of music... I suck at accumulating Smile

I would say my streaming to download ratio is like 80/20... and I only really see that going up in favor of the streaming side.

But with the extra storage, I might take a crack at dl'ing some HD content... just to see if it's worth the wait.

Half the crap I end up getting is stupid cam chit... but I watch it anyway, it's like being in a REAL movie theater Smile Smile Smile
