Not sure i agree with that. Dogmatism is when answers can't be questioned. Try telling a bunch of rabbis (let alone a bunch of Anglicans) that religion doesn't consist of continual questioning. Laughing

On the other hand, try telling ultraconservative Christians or militant Muslims that you have a different interpretation of the good book than they do.

Religious zealots are usually very mean people and lack the mental bandwidth in their brain that allows the train of thought to expand/consider any other possibilities.

Zealots are not confined to any single religion or group, or defined by any single group or religion.

i do enter that fray with my radical right fellow Christians - it ain't pretty, and often i'm left wondering how they can consider themselves to be Christian. Not because of what they believe so much as how they react and attack others who don't share their particular perspectives. To me, that smacks of idolizing their own understandings rather than approaching the faith humbly, realizing that what we don't comprehend about God is far greater than what we tell ourselves we do understand. Or perhaps underneath all their posturing they're uncomfortable with how tenuous their faith is. Check out the forum boards at carm.org if you want to see Christian freepers savagely berating & hating others, especially other Christians. i once heard that idolatry is the favorite sin of the religious, and in my experience that seems to be pretty accurate.

It also really bugs me that some folks who spout their Christian dogmas so freely and judgmentally seem to rarely have any grounding in the actual history of the faith. It's like they only have a Cliff Notes version of Christian mythology, rather than any knowledge of really basic history.

i do have some friends & acquaintances who are Muslim (and Jewish, and Pagan, and Sufi, and atheists), but they've always been reasonable and we're able to discuss the differences and similarities of our respective faiths pretty easily. As a female Muslim friend once said during a discussion that included Catholics, an Episcopalian (me), and a Jewish guy - "Why shouldn't we get along? We're all children of Abraham."
