You know that practical joke where you tie a dollar to a string and then pull it away when somebody tries to pick it up? Leaders of the Catholic Church would follow that dollar for miles.

This news should always be titled "Screw the Reformation!" Laughing

Thanks to Andrew Sullivan (such a good catholic boy - and very woofy too, imo) i found a good take on the changes in the RC apostolic constitution allowing the Anglican "personal ordinariate." Mr. Sullivan's thoughts on PapaRatzi's move are also interesting to a religion geek like me.

Amphy- my fave quote from Andrew Sullivan's article:

Quote:
"And it does not seem to have occurred because of some deep resolution of the theological disputes between Anglicans and Catholics, but merely by a shared abhorrence of women priests and openly gay ones. If you want to switch churches, prejudice seems a pretty poor reason for doing so."

Why? I am/sort of a catholic until these rat azz priests got exposed for the vile acts they perpertate, especially on kids.

I have no problem with the teachings, but I will always resent being taught about God, The Saints, etc. by the worst form of human on Earth and the Church has done nothing to correct it. (save for paying zillions in basically hush money.)

I totally agree...This article only illustrates how the Church just keeps getting worse!!! It's sad!

A great many people, judging from the amount of commenting in the Anglican & RC blogospheres. More so among the C of E bloggers than among anyone else, at least of the blogs i scan. Episcopalians (American Anglicans) seem pretty underwhelmed about the whole thing. We've always had folks leaving to "swim the Tiber" to Rome and arriving by "swimming the Thames" from Rome. So, the pope's enabling an Anglican Rite within the RC Church. That's the only real change. Well, that and making it clear that currently married Anglican Bishops can only be priests in the newly established personal ordinariate.

Ondi - here's my favorite observation by Andrew:
Quote:
In fact, I bet you the bigger impact could be a bunch of liturgically traumatized Catholics in England and America moving en masse to those sublime Anglican liturgies, if there are sufficient bells, smells, incense, and King James.
Wes' Mom, who is a long time RC convert, was amazed by how old-school RC the liturgy is at my high-church Episcopal parish. Still, rather than accompany me to church every Sunday, she's holding out for Wes to take her to "real church" (an RC parish). Laughing So cute, and she's always worried she'll offend me by saying that (i'm not offended.) She always backs out if i offer to take her to an RC church, which i'm certainly willing to do. i think she's just trying to get Wes, who was raised Catholic, to go to Mass.

From the website of St.-Matthews-In-The-City, (Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand):
Quote:
St Matthew-in-the-City would like to acknowledge the hospitality of Pope Benedict XVI. Yesterday it was reported that the Roman Catholic Church will fast- track the reception of Anglican individuals, parishes and dioceses en masse into their fold. It seems they are being invited to share that church’s view that women and openly gay and lesbian individuals should not be ordained and only heterosexual couples should have their unions blessed by God.

By this action, Benedict has done world Anglicanism a favour. He has provided a door for some of our most reactionary and close-minded adherents to leave our fold. We are grateful to Rome, and we sincerely wish them all the best. Good luck.

Inspired by Rome’s hospitality, St Matthew-in-the-City wishes to reciprocate. Although we know of many Roman Catholics who are frequently appalled by the conservatism of their Church and yet faithfully continue to work within it, we would like to assure all Christians and those of other faiths who feel marginalized by their gender, sexual orientation or their inclusive, progressive theology that they will be received fully and warmly into the life of St Matthew’s. No questions asked. Indeed this has in theory been the broad welcoming position of the entire Anglican Church in Aotearoa New Zealand for many decades. We just haven’t made any press statements about it.
