Sorry CY-I have been an EMT so long I have a three digit state number (They are six digits now) and I whole-heartedly believe seat belts cause more injury that they prevent.

You are of course entitled to your opinion. I just would be very sad to hear if you were hurt in a car accident knowing you might have been protected by a belt. My wife's experience as an EMT for several years was that people with seat belts always ended up in better condition than those without.

Maybe after more experience she will change her mind.

Doubt it. She ran two or three calls a night on a busy interstate highway for about 5 years.

I asked her about it last night. She said she had seen accidents where people suffered minor injuries from seat belts that they otherwise would not have suffered, but she'd never seen an accident where the belt severely harmed or killed anyone who would have otherwise been all right. She has seen hundreds of accidents where people who were dead would not have been had they been wearing belts.

But she also agrees that people should not be legally required to wear belts. She doesn't think people should be legally prevented from putting their own lives in danger.

Dear SSSS,
Your argument from experience is valid and reliable.
In fact, I've heard the same thing from many other
mature and experienced emergency responders...
But the inclusion of air-bags in modern vehicles has
changed the dynamics (and the physics) of this
debate...
Personally, I can't stand the government "ordering"
me to wear a seat belt, when there are none on my
daughter's school bus, and helmets are optional for
motorcyclists... Hypocrisy Abounds...
So I drape the damn thing over my shoulder and tuck
the buckle into the crease...
I'll meet an exploding air bag (or my maker) with a
smile of independence...
Have a good day !

SSSS, I'm guessing you handled a few thousand accidents over the years. Bet you're glad those days are over.

Oh brant you don't know how happy !!

free-you hit on my number one complaint about the seat belt law. It is illegal for me to drive down to my neighbors without buckling up, but we can put 66 kids on a school bus with no seat belts and a big metal seat for them to face plant on!

Never figured out why school buses didn't have seat belts. Mine in high school did though.
