Obama seeks $250 payments for seniors
Money is meant to offset no increase in Social Security in 2010

WASHINGTON - President Barack Obama called on Congress Wednesday to approve $250 payments to more than 50 million seniors to make up for no increase in Social Security next year.

The White House put the cost at $13 billion.

The Social Security Administration is scheduled to announce Thursday that there will be no cost of living increase next year. By law, increases are pegged to inflation, which has been negative this year.

It would mark the first year without an increase in Social Security payments since automatic adjustments were adopted in 1975.

"Even as we seek to bring about recovery, we must act on behalf of those hardest hit by this recession," Obama said in a statement. "This additional assistance will be especially important in the coming months, as countless seniors and others have seen their retirement accounts and home values decline as a result of this economic crisis."

Obama's proposal is similar to several bills in Congress. The $250 payments would also go to those receiving veterans benefits, disability benefits, railroad retirees and retired public employees who don't receive Social Security. Recipients would be limited to one payment, even if they qualified for more.

The payments would match the ones issued earlier this year as part of the massive economic recovery package enacted in February. Several key members of Congress have said they are open to providing relief to seniors to make up for no increase in Social Security payments.

"We're looking at a way to address it," said Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., chairman of the Senate Finance Committee, which oversees Social Security. "I'm not sure what the exact answer is yet, but we're looking at ways to address that."

Rep. Charles Rangel, D-N.Y., chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, which has jurisdiction over Social Security in the House, said he supports the $250 payments.

How is this a tax increase? If you have other information other than this article, please show me your source. This article says they're sending you and all seniors, veterans, etc $250. But, like I said, if you wanna boycott this payment, send it back or send it to me!! Wink

The fine that you're talking about has nothing to do with this article.

And your info is wrong...The fine is $1,500 per family or $750 per individual, not $1,900. The only ones that would have to pay the fine are those individuals that don't have health insurance. If you have health insurance, you don't pay it! ALL SENIORS have insurance....It's called Medicare!! So SENIORS are not going to pay anything!! And this post was about seniors getting money... Second, it's just a proposal....It wasn't even written by Obama!

Your hatred for Obama is what's blinding you, Phony!!!

Here in GA, you go to jail and have to pay a fine for not having car insurance!!! How is this any different?

I'll say it again, either send him back the $250 or send it to me!!!! I'll put it to good use! Wink

Phony, I'm with you on this payment to seniors. Many of the rest of us have suffered cutbacks and had to make do. The senior citizens should do the same. We can't just keep adding on spending initiatives as if we're putting bulbs on a Christmas tree.

If you don't want that 250, you can give it to me. I'll buy a Wii with it.

But we MANDATE that sick and injured people get treated...

Why not mandate that people have some semblance of coverage for the care they are required to be provided?

Because the 250 is supposed to replace the COLA that is not going to occur this year due to negative COL growth... SSI recipients are also not getting a COLA, so they are included in the recipient group for the 250.

And neither group should be getting a bonus like this. The cost of living did not go up. We cannot keep throwing money at every perceived inequity in society. I'm all for universal, single-payer health care, and I didn't complain too much about the bailouts because the alternatives were so distasteful, but enough is enough.
