I don't think we've talked about this before:

Should health-care legislation include a public option?

Absolutely. You need a hammer to hold over the heads of insurance companies. If they want to stay in business, they compete with the public option. If the can't, sayonara.

Don't know what "media" you are referring to, but countless unbiased polls reveal a slight to clear margin in favor of some form of health care reform that includes either non-profit co-ops, a public option, or single payer.

I for one had decided I'm not longer in favor of the public option. Its not strong enough, has a great potential to fail do to the power of the health care industry, and when it does it will be used as an example of why the government can't run anything. As of now, I am in favor of single payer. Health care companies have no business existing, no pun intended.

Other than the insurance companies and their profit sharers, I honestly don't know how anyone could be against the public option (unless they don't understand it).

OK, Cy gives a good reason to be against the public option. I am just so anti-insurance companies right now, that anything that makes them sweat just a little is a good thing.

I can't fathom ANY justification for there to exist private sector health insurance companies.

Please, anyone, provide ONE benefit that a private, for-profit insurer brings to the table that a public plan would not be able to offer...

I would support it as a stopgap between what we have now and single payer, but only if that transition could be made quickly. The reason I don't like it anymore is because its not strong enough. I'm now convinced that as long as private insurance companies exist, they will be able to destroy anything that gets in the way of their profits, including a government run option, and they will destroy it with the help of conservatives on capitol hill. Its win-win for them. The GOP claims that the government can't run health care when it fails, so they help it fail to fulfill their own prophecy. Health care companies want people to think they are better than a government plan so they can keep taking in those obscene profits. To expect that a public option will succeed at this point is, sadly, perhaps a little naive. Health care companies need to be removed altogether, period. The sad part is, the huge opposition to that kind of plan, the people that are happy with their coverage now, are going to be the ones suffering in about ten years when they are the first to suddenly find they can no longer afford their insurance. Single payer will look awfully pretty to them then.

Lets sell health insurance the way we sell life insurance. You could by as much or a little coverage as you can afford. or the way we sell car insurance, full coverage or liabailty only.

I am infavor of doing away with all forms of insurance. That would lower cost because we would have to pay, not some faceless insurance company.

The phrase "you can afford" is the key failure in your argument, George. In this country, one person should not be getting better health care than his neighbor just because he can afford it. Of course, your central argument has always seemed to be that the poor or even those in the struggling middle class should just die and get out of the way.

So, how should I decide how much or how little I want?

Should I buy insurance against the things that I am MOST likely to suffer from? Heart disease, diabetes, and cancer (family history)... What happens if I end up with MS and didn't think to by MS insurance?

Health insurance is different than life insurance or auto insurance... It's not like I can say, well, I drive a beat up clunker so I'll just get minimum coverage... I can choose to insure myself against cold and flu, but I could still end up with cancer, a heart attack and monkey pox.
