The Cowboys would be my least favorite at this point, because Jerry Jones is such a horse's ass, but if the Cowboys win this week, then a week's worth of Brett Favre worship is avoided. I have mixed feelings. _________________

And I just saw that Favre told Ed Werder that he'll think about retiring this offseason. I'm sure that will be a quick, cut-and-dried, non-dramatic process. _________________

Cylinsier wrote: | DAL @ MIN - Dallas got the monkey off their back. Now its been non-stop "Told you they were great," and "Dallas is going to win the Super Bowl" chatter from all news outlets. Not so fast; I'm not saying Dallas didn't look impressive last weekend, but the Eagles handed them that game from the start. The Vikings have a much more ruthless defense and a much less anemic offense. The Cowboys greatest weakness may be the media telling them how great they are. The Vikings are just plain better. Tony Romo does luck out with not having a single outdoor game left that he could play until the Super Bowl (or is that a dome too?), but I like him to wilt under the pressure anyway. Vikes, 32-14
NYJ @ SD - This is probably the easiest pick of the four. San Diego is absolutely unstoppable right now. The Jets have looked really good at times, but they are still very young; no one really expects them to conquer the world this fast. I think they are in place to control their division for a long time and be perennial playoff contenders, but this isn't their year. It may very well be San Diego's. The Jets will put up a good fight, but Chargers, 27-24 |
RE: Dallas game
Wow, this made my day. The Cowboys were completely inept in all facets of the game. Tony Romo didn't actually have a bad game...the part where he wasn't sitting on the turf wondering what hit him. The Vikings defense battered the fool all day long. Favre showed he still has a little in the tank by taking a few hits himself and coming back out to throw some sick TDs. Jerry Jones is so senile he can't remember when his team ever did anything meaningful in the playoffs.
RE: Jets game
The Jets really shocked the world with this one. I don't think anybody who doesn't wear Jets gear picked them to win this game. The Chargers seem to be perennially stuck on the doorstep of meaningful success. The Jets D is pretty scary when its working and Sanchez managed at least not to lose the game which is all his team is expecting from the rookie right now. Everything else clicked. The Jets are a serious threat right now, not just a fascinating fluke.

Peyton Manning will take care of the Jets with ease. Unless Sanchez, who is due for a stinker, pulls a Namath and guarantees victory of course. I just need the Colts to win by a little more than your prediction, Cy. Colts -7.5
I heard on the radio that Reggie Bush will propose to Kim Kardashian if and only if the Saints win the Super Bowl. Thats enough for me to assume he is tanking this game. This is a real toss up, but I'll take Jared Allen's mullet and Minnesota as well.

I could see the Colts actually blowing the Jets out of the water. I just predicted it closer out of respect for the Jets' D.
Of the two, the Saints/Vikes was the harder one to decide on. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

Peyton Manning is sick. I've never seen a QB like him before. Comes out one series, gets shut down. Very next series, completely manipulates the defense to do just what he wants. Yes, I'm too young to have seen many of the great play, and yes its always hard to tell how good a player was until his career is over and you take a look back, but I'm prepared to list Manning at least top 3, maybe number 1. He's up there with Unitas and Sammy Baugh in terms of revolutionizing the way the position is played, IMO. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Cylinsier wrote: | NYJ @ IND - I'll start this prediction by saying that the New York Jets have been incredibly impressive this season. I don't think anyone saw them getting this far. Knocking off the Chargers in SD is no laughing matter. Based on the run they are having, I don't think anyone would be too shocked to see them in the Super Bowl. That said, the Charges game was very close and the Jets didn't even have a lead until the 4th quarter. Add to that that the Chargers kicker left 9 points on the field by no one's fault but his own, and you can see how much luck played into their win. I'm not trying to diss them; they've earned everything they've gotten so far, but the ball has bounced their way an inordinate amount of times.
Enter Peyton Manning and the Colts. Manning and company had the best regular season of any team in the NFL and quickly quashed any mumbling of a 3 week hangover by manhandling the Ravens. It wasn't even close. Now consider the similarities between the Jets and the Ravens: both have young QBs under center and both strongly focus on their defense as the key to winning games. We saw how well Baltimore's defense fared against Manning...sure, they did okay at first, but 20 points isn't exactly pride worthy. On the other side of that, the Colts defense is the real sleeper D this post-season; they spelled disaster for the overmatched Ravens. Now the Jets do have a few more offensive weapons, but I just don't see them putting up the kind of points Manning is capable of. I expect this game to be close and I expect it to be low scoring, but I expect the Colts to win it in the end. Colts, 20-14 |
What can I say? The first half of the game pretty much belonged to the Jets. It started out evenly enough, but the Jets took command in the 2nd quarter. But Peyton Manning is the smartest player in football. He didn't just react to what he had seen in the first half, he comprehended it, utilized it, and manipulated it to his advantage. Nothing against the Jets; they had a great run and this will not be the last time we see them and Sanchez battling for a championship. But the Colts are on a mission this season and they are lead by the best player in the sport right now. Tough odds for any team. It was closer than the score indicates, but the Colts are going to their second Super Bowl in 4 years, and I expect they'll win it. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Great game. I'm glad the Jets kept it interesting. They exceeded my expectations. Manning deserves all the praises in the world. The only thing I disagree with, Cy, is expecting the Colts to win it all. The Vikes and the Saints are both very competitive teams. Could be a first Super Bowl pick'em ... if gambling were legal. _________________

Cylinsier wrote: | MIN @ NO - The Saints seemed like the team more ripe for hangover than the Colts to me, and after the Cards dropped a half century of points on Green Bay, I was fully expecting another point scoring clinic and felt pretty confident that the Cards could upset. Well I was wrong. It was a point clinic, but only for one team. Credit the Saints defense, which is healthier now than it has been in a long time. The Saints are more dangerous right now than they have been all season, and that's what makes this pick that much more crazy on my part.
The Vikings didn't play the Saints in the regular season, so there's no indicator of how these teams match up except on paper yet. So it all has to be speculation at this point. This is my speculation: Brett Favre is playing the best he ever has right now. He's been this far before and he's too old to get jittery. He'll be playing in a dome which is better conditions than he spent most of his career in. He's got one of the best RBs in the league behind him, some very underrated receivers, and a solid line. And the Vikings D is arguably the best of the four left in the playoffs right now. The difference between the Vikings and the Saints is minimal and they are both solid in all aspects of the game. But the team with the most pressure here is the Saints; they are the ones ordained since weeks ago to be fantastic. Sure, they have one under their belt in the post season and some momentum, but its all for naught if they don't go all the way. I like the Vikes to upset. To me, the homefield advantage isn't going to have an effect on this Vikings team, the passing of both teams is a dead heat, the Vikes have a slight edge in running and the Vikes D is just plain better. This game is going to be brutal, a little more points than the other, and just as close, but old man Favre still has a couple tricks up his sleeve. Vikes, 33-27 |
Great game through regulation. Lots of good defensive play and still room for some offense. The Vikings dug themselves in a hole with multiple turnovers but managed to keep it tied.
Brett Favre had a chance to put his team in FG range and win it, but he blew it. He'll be kicking himself all off season.
And then OT started, and the refs basically handed the game to the Saints. I've never seen so many favorable calls for one team in one game, let alone one drive. They even rubbed it in by letting the booth challenge three different calls only to uphold them. Guess we know what matchup the NFL wanted. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Favre turned back into Mr. Hyde at precisely the wrong time, just as you might expect. And the refs sure didn't do the Vikings any favors. That PI call was bull@#%#. First, the ball was uncatchable. Second, I didn't really see much in the way of interference. _________________

Yeah, that PI call was by far the worst offender, but I'll list you off everything I thought was bogus about that drive:
Blown call 1: Saints have several yards to go for a first down. Its third I think. Brees tosses one to his receiver. The ball is ruled incomplete but PI is called. This one was questionable at least. At this point, I chalked it up to just a generous call, nothing more.
Blown call 2: Third and long. Brees hits his receiver right at the 1st down line and he bobbles the ball, eventually grasping it a few yards shy. The refs give him forward progress even though he didn't have possession of the ball at the point they spotted it. This play is reviewed and inexplicably upheld. It didn't give them the first down but it got them close enough for the next play.
Blown call 3: 4th and 1. The Saints decide to go for it. The RB leaps and possibly clears the marker, although he comes down short of it. A second camera angle showed that the ball was actually knocked loose. When the RB regained possession and came down, he was clearly short of the 1st by at least a yard. The play was called a 1st down but reviewed. The play was again inexplicably upheld.
Blown call 4: Another long yardage situation, and Brees badly overthrows his receiver. Furthermore, no contact is made whatsoever between the receiver and the DB. Nevertheless, PI is called and a new set of downs is awarded.
Blown call 5: After an impressive stand, the Vikings have pushed the Saints back again and possibly out of FG range. Brees tosses a 12 yard or so pass but the ball is juggled and hits the grown, though the WR traps it. The pass is called complete, but reviewed. For the third time in one drive, the play is inexplicably upheld. _________________ The end is nigh! OR forums die APRIL 1. Don't lose contact! Join the forums at bogsource.com now! |

I noticed all of those too. 4 & 5 were the most obvious. I was too busy laughing to care. They kept showing Favre, then the camera cut to Favre's mother, wife, and daughter(?). The looks on their faces kept me more entertained than the game itself. And the game was epic. Around the second quarter, I had the feeling that what I was watching was one of the best games I'll ever see. Favre getting hit, hobbling... cut to wife with hand over her head... cut back to Favre making "leg got blown off by a bouncing betty face"... cut to Coach Childress in his child molesters beard telling Adrian Peterson to get back in the game, but hold on to the football. All this, in the Superdome! I enjoyed every second of it. _________________
