Grand Total:

Super Bowl

Let's break it down. I'll talk about offense, defense, ST, coaching, and intangibles, giving points to each team for how I think they score there. The point totals are decided totally arbitrarily by me. There is no minimum or maximum; I could give one team 1,000 points of one position and another 10 for their whole team if I wanted. At the end, the points will indicate which team I think is better. Last year, both teams had exactly the same totals, which I did not plan ahead of time.

Offense:

Lines - Both teams obviously have solid lines as indicated by their offensive performances. Each of these quarterbacks has a long track record of being well protected. I like the Colts' line just a bit better. Colts 9, Saints 8.

RBs - The Saints are clearly the more accomplished running team. Its not that the Colts can't run, they just don't. While that makes it hard to judge their ability, you have to go with what you know, and we know the Saints do it better right now. Saints 12, Colts 6.

WRs - The Colts young WRs have really stepped up. The Saints obviously have some receiving talent as well based on their point totals. The Colts benefit from the better TE, but overall I think this one is a push. Both teams, 10.

QBs - Brees is an awesome QB, one of the best in the league, and he brings a lot to the table. That said, Peyton Manning. Colts 20, Saints 14.

OFFENSIVE ADVANTAGE: Colts 45 (lol), Saints 44

Defense:

Lines - Both of these teams have somewhat underrated defenses. While the Colts get the job done, the Saints have really proven that they have the ability to rush the hell out of passers. Saints 10, Colts 8.

LBs - Both teams are basically equal in my opinion. No superstars, but solid. Both teams, 8.

Secondary - Again, more or less equal. Neither secondary is going to be able to slow down the other team's offense for the entire game. Might give a slight edge to the Saints. Saints 9, Colts 8.

DEFENSIVE ADVANTAGE: Saints 27, Colts 24

Special Teams - Both teams are perfectly fine, but the Colts have the better FG kicker IMO. Colts 5, Saints 4.

Coaching - Sean Peyton is a hell of a coach. Caldwell seems to be more or less along for the ride. Saints 5, Colts 3.

Intangibles - The Colts have been here before, recently, to this city, and have won. The Saints have the weight of their franchise having never even been to a SB on their shoulders. Plus, Peyton really brings an extra edge to the game beyond just being a QB; he's like an extra coach on the sidelines as well. Colts +5 for intangibles.

EXTRAS ADVANTAGE: Colts 13, Saints 9

TOTAL POINT BREAKDOWN: Colts 82, Saints 80

Pretty close, but I give the Colts the edge. I just cannot shortchange Peyton Manning, especially when he already has a ring under his belt and should theoretically be operating with a lot less pressure. I think this game is close and I think the Saints have the lead at half time. Its going to be relatively high scoring, but not the track meet some are expecting. Peyton will figure the Saints out in the second half and that'll be that. The underrated Colts defense will make adjustments and most of the Saints points will come in the first half, with relatively little late. The Colts on the other hand will put most of their points on the board in the second half. This game will still be close until the last minute and the game will go to the team that has the ball last, which will be the Colts. Colts win it, second SB in 4 years, by a score of 38-35.

Good batch of predictions. The only thing that stuck out as off-kilter to me was San Diego. I think they do better than 8-8. Great offensive weapons and an underrated defense now that Merriman's back.

I'm not going to start nit-picking. These predictions are as good as any. But I will say that Denver might not win a game all year if Brandon Marshall doesn't get his chit together.

Well, I'll be pleased if I'm 50-50 on these picks. There's absolutely no science behind picks this early. There's always one or two teams that shock everyone with 10 plus wins and there's always one or two that look great and never win. And then there are easy ones like Pittsburgh and Indianapolis. They're always going to be near the top with the current personnel. In fact, I might have underestimated Indy; even though Dungy left, its really Peyton who coaches that team from the field.

I think the Titans jumped the shark.... and Kerry Collins went on a drunken bender and fell in the water and was almost eated by the shark, but then realized he was only dreaming and it was just Lendale White trying to eat his leg.

My "jumped the shark" team for this season is the Cowboys. Without TO to catch those deep jump balls, Romo is going to look pretty mediocre. Roy Williams is no TO. Jason Witten will be the leading receiver on that team.

I disagree... and think that the offense is better off w/out Owens. He will be turning 36 this year and was 4th in the league in dropped passes last year. But every pass he did catch seemed to be a touchdown. So, yeah, they'll miss him in the red zone. He's such a cancer, that I have to think teams are better off w/out him.

I have added to my predictions (guesses) my pick for this season's NFL MVP: Adrian Petersen.
